Political Participation

Women have little voice within Samburu community politics. Men make all decisions separately from women. They even decide on issues relating specifically to women, such as the continuance of female circumcision. The Kenyan federal government is officially committed to promoting women's rights. For example, there are laws against forced marriage (defined as marriage against the woman's choice or marriage of a young woman below the age of eighteen) and female circumcision under the age of sixteen. However, the federal government has little presence in the Samburu district, and the laws which conflict with Samburu practices are simply not recognized. Women's groups thus provide the only means by which women can participate in the political system. Only in large groups do women have a voice, one that is heard within the district and throughout Kenya and the world.
